The Appalachian Trail began as an idea in published in 1921 “An Appalachian Trail: A Project in Regional Planning” in the Journal of the American Institute of Architects. Benton Mackaye is widely acknowledged as the father of the trail, but it has been the hikers who have made the trail famous today.
